The Herder-Institut at the University of Leipzig was founded in 1951 as the first department
of German as a Foreign Language in the German-speaking world. The institute holds 4
permanent chairs, 20 academic staff members, roughly 500 students and 40 doctoral students.
It has evolved into one of the biggest and most important departments of German as a Foreign
Language in the world. Professor Dr. Schramm and her research team have made research
and community service in the field of L2 literacy learning one of the major priorities at the
institute.
